1. What do you think chaotic townscape in Kyoto? or what do you think about defining chaotic townscape as new beauty?
Chaotic townscape is ugly. It is completely different from beauty. Chaotic townscape is formed if the government and the people living there stop making their effort to keep the town beautiful. For example, imagine a room without cleaning. Is it beautiful? Chaotic townscape never can be beauty.

2. Is (old/new) beauty of townscape possible in Kyoto?
It is partly possible. To build many Machiya-style houses and create old Kyoto townscape again in city scale is impossible. As land price of Kyoto is high these days, two-storied Machiya-style house is economically inefficient compared to concrete building. However, to preserve or reproduce old Kyoto townscape is “partly” possible if government designates area where concrete building is regulated and Fire Defense Law is relaxed specially.

3. What can we do for (old/new) beauty of townscape?
Cars should be shut off from the city. People should not visit Kyoto by car and government should regulate cars in the city even if it is economically inefficient. If cars are regulated, people can walk more easily and enjoy their shopping. Ponto-chou(先斗町) keeps ideal old Kyoto townscape. Paths in the town are so narrow that cars can not run though. The problem is that as fire-engines also can not go in the town, it is difficult to extinguish fire. New technique such as sprinkler is needed to balance townscape and disaster prevention.
